The essay addresses the issue of the circular economy from the relationship with the principle of sustainable development, in its different meanings. The analysis is conducted with a critical approach aimed at verifying what, on the institutional level, can be the appropriate regulatory model to manage the new and important economic paradigm and to ensure its consistency with the objectives of environmental protection, the fundamental axiological basis of the principle. The application test is the question of land use, seen as a case of circular economy.
